Cypher ES Battery Edition AFM

The Cypher ES Battery Edition is a special configuration of the Cypher ES AFM tailored to excel in battery research and other electrochemistry applications. The configuration comes standard with the fully-sealed Cypher EC electrochemistry cell and includes blueDrive photothermal excitation for simpler and more stable imaging. It can optionally be placed inside a glovebox for lithium battery research and other sensitive battery chemistries. It is the highest performance AFM available for battery research.

  • Routinely achieve higher resolution than other AFMs
  • blueDrive makes imaging in liquids simpler and more stable

  • Fully-sealed three-electrode electrochemistry cell (working, counter, and reference electrodes)

  • EC cell constructed from highly-chemical resistant materials

  • Compatible with most third-party potentiostat models

  • Fast scanning can monitor dynamic electrochemical processes

  • Available with sample heating and cooling

  • Can be integrated in a glovebox for sub-ppm water and oxygen without affecting AFM performance

Routinely achieve higher resolution than other AFMs

  • Unmatched mechanical stability—noise floor half that of any other AFM
  • Exceptionally low drift—higher resolution and straight lattice lines
  • Low noise electronics—no artifacts from electronic noise sources

blueDrive makes imaging in liquids simpler and more stable

  • Clean photothermal drive response makes it easy to tune cantilever resonance
  • Drive remains stable over long time periods, even with fluid perfusion

Compatible with most third-party potentiostat models

  • Connecting cables provided for both CH Instruments potentiostats or general terminal connections

Fast scanning can monitor dynamic electrochemical processes

  • Scans 10-100× faster than typical AFMs
  • Supports the fastest, smallest probes (3×9 µm spot size—optional)

Available with sample heating and cooling

  • Optional sample heater-cooler integrates with EC cell
  • Enables cooling to 0°C and heating up to 120°C

Can be integrated in a glovebox for sub-ppm water and oxygen

  • Well-established performance with ultra-stable customized MBraun glovebox models
  • Compatible with most other glovebox models of adequate size
  • AFM performance (resolution/noise) unaffected even during active glovebox operation

Designed for the Rigors of EC Research

  • 200 μL working volume—large enough to avoid significant reaction induced concentration changes and small enough to conserve reagents
  • EC Cell liquid cup simply clamps on top of sample (working electrode) and contains electrolyte
  • Compatible with wire or fritted Ag/AgCl reference electrode, which insert through the probe holder
  • EC cell and probe clip are provided in both glass-filled PEEK and PPS (Ryton®) for compatibility with most solvent electrolyte materials.
  • Perfluoroelastomer O-ring (FFKM, P-Rex®) seals against the working electrode.
  • The liquid cup forms a well-defined working electrode surface area, ~55 mm2
  • Pre-formed concentric counter electrode is easy to install and avoids directional artifacts.
  • Shielded electrode connections preserve highly sensitive signals and route neatly to an external potentiostat.
EC-AFM in a glovebox

Highest performance EC-AFM in a glovebox

  • Custom Mbraun gloveboxes come with stable reinforced stands for lowest noise
  • Air bearing platform allows the Cypher to be easily moved and positioned in the glovebox
  • All AFM cables are provided in fully-sealed KF40 flanges
  • Cypher is the only AFM that can routinely achieve atomic resolution even with the glovebox blower running
